The overhaul your 650 needs

The 600/650 engines have long been the go-to platform — trusted for there proven reliability and straight forward dependable performance. However, as the 650 platform has evolved with increased power output and course-driven specification changes, a number of critical mechanical deficiencies have emerged that we are seeing with alarming frequency. |
KNOWN FAILURE POINTS 1. Crankshaft & Rotating Assembly Imbalance The OEM 650 crankshaft is lighter than its 850 counterpart — a difference as small as 4 oz in rotating mass. With much smaller and lighter pistons it creates a measurable loss in the flywheel effect and harmonic imbalance. This imbalance accelerates wear across the entire lower end and is a primary contributor to the crankshaft failures we are tracking at a far higher rate on the 650 vs the 850. |

2. Main Bearing & Lower End Failure The reduced oil volume in the 650's design places the main bearings under sustained thermal stress. Once bearing wear begins, there are virtually no early warning signs — the first indication is often catastrophic lower end failure, which can take out the entire motor. We have documented cases of piston seizure caused directly by oil starvation — the piston melts itself to the cylinder wall. |

3. Top End Degradation Insufficient oil flow to the top end accelerates cylinder and piston wear. In our experience, the majority of 650 engines will not survive past 5,000 miles without intervention. |
INDY SPECIALTY SOLUTIONS We don't wait for failure — we engineer it out. Oil Passage Machining (Crankcase): We machine a dedicated oil passage directly into the crankcase, allowing significantly greater oil volume to reach the bearings and pistons. This addresses the root cause of the lubrication deficiency at the source. |

Heavy Crankshaft Upgrade: We offer an upgraded, heavier crankshaft to restore proper rotating assembly balance and eliminate the harmonic imbalance inherent to the stock 650 build. Even a modest increase in rotating mass makes a dramatic difference in long-term engine stability. |
Torque Plate Honing: Cylinders are honed under simulated load conditions using a torque plate, producing a superior surface finish that reduces friction and heat — directly protecting the top end. |
ECM Recalibration (Optional): Independent of the mechanical work, we can recalibrate the ECM to increase oil delivery volume. This can be performed as a standalone service or in conjunction with the crankcase machining for maximum effect. |
WHY THIS MATTERS There are no tell-tale signs before complete failure on the 650. By the time a problem is felt, the damage is done — and it is expensive. Our process corrects these issues proactively, before they leave you stranded or facing a full engine replacement. If you have a 650 in your fleet or your garage, we strongly recommend scheduling an evaluation before it reaches critical mileage. |
WARRANTY The 650 upgrade service, when performed in the off-season before Labor Day, includes a 3-year warranty on dropped-off or shipped motors. If Indy Specialty removes and reinstalls the motor, the 3-year warranty applies; however, labor for the removal and reinstallation is not included for work performed during the riding season — only during the off-season.  |
